In his Recollections of the last days of Shelley and Byron (1858), E. J. Trelawny explains that during the disinterment of Shelley’s body near Viareggio, the « iron [of the mattock] had struck a skull …. » He claims that Lord Byron desired Shelley’s skull for himself, but Trelawny, recalling that Byron had once used a skull as a drinking-cup, « was determined Shelley’s should not be so profaned. » During the cremation, Trelawny reports that Shelley’s corpse fell over, and the « frontal bone of the skull, where it had been struck with the mattock, fell off … »

Bon.Hier Argenteuil où je rame un peu. Aujourd’hui lever 7h pour garer la voiture et je me rendors sur « le bain de Diane  » de Klossowski que j’avais lu en 1983.

Au super marché un homme, lunettes de soleil sur le front parle très mal à la femme qui l’accompagne. Il est élégant pas mal, et elle se hâte, panier en main.Elle est maigrichonne, il lui dit pauvre folle et des choses du genre. Je comprends qu’il est aveugle ce sale type. Imbécile, trouve des Danettes dit-il . Elle s’exécute docilement. Elle a un petit visage ( alcoolique?). Je traine un peu pour suivre le dossier puis pars en soupirant.Pas le courage d’aller peindre. Recherches ici.

Diner chez E.et V. Délicieusement bon. Et agréable. Nous marchons le long du Luxembourg avec GG. Puis je bifurque vers Notre Dame des Champs. Il est plus de minuit. Il fait bon.

The Collection was the creation of the financier Carl H. Pforzheimer, Sr. (1879-1957), who took a special interest in the lives and works of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley and his contemporaries, including his second wife, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, her parents, William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft, and such friends and fellow writers as Lord Byron, Claire Clairmont, Teresa Guiccioli, Thomas Jefferson Hogg, Leigh Hunt, Thomas Love Peacock, Horace Smith, and Edward John Trelawny.

The Bodleian Library and The New York Public Library — include close to 90 percent of all known surviving Shelley manuscripts, embodying the history of literary Romanticism in Great Britain and the United States. SHELLEY’S GHOST offers a lens through which to see that history.
